Bike Baby!

I was noticing the other day, that although our modes of transport here have changed dramatically, in many ways they are the same. I still transport the kids. The "mom" car. Take your pick, station wagon, mini van, SUV of the bike world. That's what I drive.

And Peter still gets to drive the "sedan" of the bike world. His "commuter" bike, so to say. Although he has to ride it in work clothes. Ew. Hot and sticky. Neither of us complain though. We're very happy to have our bikes here, and a trailor to boot!

I get a lot of stares/laughs/compliments when the kids are all piled in here. I take Ruby to school every day like this, and pick her up as well. Gideon has ridden in a car seat three times since we've been here. Nearly two months. I had no idea how different life would be here. It's very slow though, and not having a car makes us very thankful for all we do have, and how so many people in the world live like this.

I will say though, that the kids are dying for a car. And honestly, we kind of think it's good for them to have to "suffer" a bit. When we want to get something or go somewhere, we have to work a little harder for it. (or pay a taxi - boo, hiss. use your legs!)

If I had known we would be using our bikes so much, I might have actually bought decent bikes. These are fun, and kind of cute, but they're just beach cruisers. I bought them used out of the paper, and they're in rough shape. Had I known I'd be hauling kids everywhere I went, I would have at least bought something with gears. Sheesh! And if you know what a lousy bike rider I am, you should be REALLY impressed that I ride this baby everywhere. Squeaks and all.

Side note, we are talking about getting a car at some point. But for now, why? We've survived the hottest part of the year without one. Why get one now?

p.s. THANKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS!!! I LOVE THEM. KEEP IT UP!!!

Okay...you are awesome! I am impressed. I am also strangely jealous. I think it sounds hot and tiring but at the same time kind of neat.

Just so you know, I check your blog several times a day. I am fascinated by your life. :)

Love you!!!!!

I bet there is not a Craig's list for SA where you can get new bikes, either! Bummer! I won't regale you with tales of my sleek new ride, then!
