It was getting late when we made our way to the D-Day Cemetary in Normandy. Peter thought maybe we should forget it, as we went to Luxembourg last year. But having been here before, and being this close with the kids - I kind of made a stink and we got here just before the gate closed. We actually ended up getting locked in. Apparently it closes AT dusk. The kids crawled under a gate to get out, while Peter and I waited on the other side for someone to let us out. Took a while, but we didn't mind. It was a beautiful evening in a very memorable place.
There really aren't words for this place, it is amazing. It overlooks the beaches up on a cliff. It's American soil, and there is a feeling of peace here. Giddie loved touching all of the letters on the markers, I thought it was a beautiful sight. I imagine there are people buried here that had babies of their own, that they never got to see again. I am SO thankful for these boys who sacrificed thier lives for us. It's been a long time now. I hope none of us ever forget what they did for us. Never minimize it. Never think is was a waste. Just for a minute, think what our world might be like now if these sweet young men weren't lying to rest here in this cemetary. Now go and thank your granparents, hug your babies, and next time you see our lovely flag flying in the wind say a little prayer of thanks.
