I finally have my own Laura Ingalls! When I finally finished this outfit, I said to Peter, "I have been waiting my whole life to make my OWN daughter a bonnet and apron."
Yes. I realize I am a total nerd. Sorry. But doesn't she look totally beautiful?
I made the apron and bonnet from Peter's old work shirts, which makes it even better. Just like Ma! (that's Caroline, to you - if you don't know that I am referring to Little House on the Prairie, I'm not sure we can be friends...)
And how 'bout the lunch bucket?!!! Too awesome. It's actually an empty honey bucket I have. Hey, who's to say that the pioneers didn't get their honey from Yemen like I do? You don't know that.
This is all for International Day at the elementary school. They ask that you dress in your "Native Dress". Uh. We don't have a native dress. Although you may remember last year when one of my kids wore our Indian head dress. That was pretty awesome.
This year though, I thought. You know what my ancestors wore? That's right - pioneer garb. AND, I just happen to have my outfit here. I made my outfit 15 years ago when Peter and I were a Ma and Pa on a pioneer trek, so it's pretty thrashed. Angel has been begging me to make her a set since I wore mine for Halloween. Lucky for her, it was her 40th birthday the week before Intl. Day and I made her her own set as her gift. That and a 9 a.m. surprise party, that is. (She was in her work out clothes, smudgy make-up from the night before, and a messy pony tail. You shoulda seen it - too funny. Lucky for me, she's a good sport )
Anyway. I made her a set, a set for her daughter, a little apron for her three year old, and Ruby her own set as well. It was really cute. We were asked to work in the USA booth and serve apple pie. Well, of course!
I have made so many bonnets and aprons for other people's daughters over the years, that I was SO happy to make one for my very own (and only) daughter Ruby.
I think Laura would approve.

The Yemen honey bucket looks just like a lunch pail! LOVE it!
Totally unrelated to this blog post, but I had some good old fashioned American B.O. at the gym yesterday. And it was spin, so I was sucking air the whole time, and every time I did, it was B.O. And every time the fan blew towards me, B.O. I was feeling your Middle Eastern B.O. pain.
