Frenchie Grows Up; Meet Minky

In case you didn't know this about my sister, Mindy (better known to you as Minky), she has wanted to be Frenchie, from Grease, for the better part of her life.

Let's be honest? Who doesn't? Adorable. Likable. Goes to beauty school? She makes the movie. And I gotta tell ya. I like the pink hair. While others thought Frenchie was cute; Minky knew that's what she wanted to be. (not the drop out part - the beauty school part) Minky has been doing hair since she was three. Maybe younger. Every Barbie we owned had ruined hair. Only ruined though because a six year old tried to cut, color, curl and style each one of them. (Barbie's hair doesn't work that way, btw.) Minky grew up knowing what she wanted to do from day one; make people look pretty. With three sisters surrounding her, she sucked as much 'girl' from the earth as she could and threw it into making her and those around her beautiful. And while she didn't drop out of beauty school, as Frenchie did, she did go. And complete it. And has a great business helping people feel good about themselves. Some of you may remember being 'done up' by her in our early years. Many an hour I sat on the dark brown toilet in our upstairs bathroom while she did my hair and makeup. Or sat on the counter watching as she did one of my/her friends, Culture Club blaring from her bedroom next door.

Isn't she cute? She's like the new and improved version of Frenchie. 'Frenchie grows up, meet Minky'.

Now. As I mentioned in my last post, Minky is a magician.

Once a year I breakdown and let her do pretty much whatever she wants to my hair. (I figure it's the least I can do for her. Haha, just kidding. I'm lazy.) Sometimes I have very specific things, like; no crazy color. Or, no perms. Or something like that. What about the rest of the year, Teresa? Gosh, since you're asking. I don't do a thing. No cut, no color. Nada. Needless to say, I look pretty cute for a couple of weeks, maybe two months or so. Then it's staight back into a pony tail and don't touch it for a year. See. The trouble is, I just don't care. I don't have time. And again, I just don't care.

This year coming back to the states, I said to myselft, "I'm going to get my hair chopped off." The only requirement every year is, "It must fit into a pony tail!" My hair was down to the middle of my back and not looking too good. Scragglie, unhealthy, and needed some color. But, as usual, I decided to forget it. I live in the middle of a no where desert, WHO CARES? I wore it in a pony or low bun, every single day. It's too hot to wear it down.

Four days before we left, I decided, all right. I'm going to have my annual hair cut. Trouble with hair in the middle east, is there is really no one to cut it. If you have a short cut, you can't maintain it. And that's the key to short hair, isn't it? You have to get it cut regularly to keep it looking cute. At any rate, I went to see Minky the Magician.

"It STILL has to fit into a pony tail. But I don't care how that happens. If I have to use clips, I don't care. I just want it shorter and cute. Oh yeah. And I need my eyebrows waxed." I mean, once a year a girl needs to trim her eyeball hedges, don't you think?

Now let me tell you a little story, here goes: Once upon a time there was a girl that over all has nice skin. But this girl's skin can be sensative. REALLY sensative. When her sister applies wax to her areas needing to be waxed; it ain't pretty! First of all, I have been blessed with nearly clear peach fuzz. (don't remark if it's darker than I think!!!) Second of all, I don't have a lot of it. But when I get a facial waxing, once the hair is ripped out, I break out in the most horrific hives.

*see photo above*

They itch, and hurt, and burn, and are sticky with wax and I HATE IT! This year as I leaned back for my annual wax, The Magician decided to take her own liberties. There I am lying back in the chair, eyes closed, ready for a couple of swipes of pain, when she starts putting wax on other parts of my face!!! WHHHHHAT??? Oh mama. No really. OH MAMA! (it brings me to tears just writing about it.) She waxed my eye brows, and then, never having been done before; my upper lip, and some of my chin. I am not kidding you when I tell you I yelled like and mad woman and cried like a baby. Really. Tears running down my face. It was bad. Reallllly bad.

And then I got over it. As Minky The Magician has been telling me since I was eight or so, "Beauty is Pain, Teresa!" This goes for pierced ears, tight pants, high heels, combing out after ratting your hair, and apparently: Body Waxing, as well. Okay enough about beauty and pain. Can we really be related? I mean, come on. Loose fit jeans, a t-shirt, old man shoes, and a pony tail and I'm good to go. But then Minky does things like this:

And then I remember that a little effort goes a long way. Not saying I look great, but it's not like there's a lot to work with here. She did a great job though, didn't she? It can still fit into a pony...kind of. But it's working fine.

Want to know the funny thing? In real life. Back on camp, I have now seen a lot of people I know. Time after time, after time, people keep saying this, "You've lost weight, haven't you? You look great." And, "What's different about you, you look wonderful." "You look so fit and healthy." Etc, etc. Want to know something funny? I haven't lost one, not ONE pound. I weigh, to the ounce, the exact same as the day I left in June.

See? A magician I tell you. Not that she reads my blog AH_HEM! But again, a giant thank you!!!!! She never let's me pay her either, stinker. Now. If you ever think you want to meet Minky the Magician, let me know. I'm pretty sure she'll charge you though. Maybe you can ask for a blog friend discount. But even if you're just driving through the greater Salt Lake area, she can do this for you too. She'll take what she has to work with, and turn you into a beauty queen. Well. I mean. If that's what you want. But whatever you want, she can do. Beacause she is...

Minky the Magician!

Now if I can just find someone to help keep the face mowed and the hair shaped, that's be great...

You look fantastic!!! Mindy is a talented magician for sure, but also dearheart, you have one of the most beautiful heads of hair ever!!! So she did have good material to work with. And short hair forces the eye to look upward, so they notice you-your face, your glowing skin and awesome smile! love ya!

You look great Teresa! Way to let the magician work her magic. And, if it means anything, I think the ponytails that just fit in are cute too. All the way around you will look great! Miss you, and love reading your blog (If only I had more time so I could keep up with everyone's comings and goings...) Take care Yenta. :)

Wow I'm super late on the commenting. Maybe because you didn't up your blog ALL SUMMER. Ahem. I've already complimented your SUPER cute hair - it makes me want to grow mine out just so Mindy can cut it. I also wanted to reminisce about the fact that Mindy did my hair for my wedding! Still best hair day ever!
